We are new at this whole blogging thing. That is likely pretty obvious. For one thing, we had never heard of “Flat Runners” until we entered this world. In fact, when we did our first “Flat Runner” post, one of our own (who shall remain nameless) had to Google it to figure out what the heck we were talking about! (I’ve added a link to @SoWhatIRun if you need an explanation too!) Another fun thing we have noticed is the concept of the “Friday Five” post. We thought that in celebration of spring, sunshine, tank tops, skorts, cherry blossoms, bike rides, and baby horses, we’d give a Friday Five a shot. So, here are the five things we are loving this April. (Disclaimer: We are not scientists, doctors, or anything like that, and these are our opinions. Some things that work for us, may not work for you! These are just our thoughts on products we like!)
Yes, we are runners. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun doing other things! And cross training is good for you! With several of us training for triathlons and a local century ride, the Horsey Hundred
, that means the bicycles are coming out for their moment in the sunshine. We dusted them off, pumped up the tires, found our bike helmets, donned funny looking shorts and set out for our first ride of the year — a 50 mile extravaganza to Woodford Reserve Distillery
. No, we did not get to drink bourbon when we got there (and getting there was an adventure in and of itself), but we had a great lunch and a great time spending a gorgeous day together — in our PRO Compression
PowerBar ProteinPlus® Bar 20g – Peanut Butter Cookie
What do we all like about racing? Well, a lot of things, but FOOD. One of MB’s favorite races is the Papa John’s 10 Miler
in Louisville, and one of the reasons it is so great is all the post race food. Not only is there FREE PIZZA (unlimited by the way), but they always have a great spread of sports-brand foods. It’s a fun way to try something new that you might not have noticed at the store. This year, the race had several boxes of PowerBar ProteinPlus® Bars
. Intriguing. MB loves her Clif Builders bars
(mmmm, hazelnut!), but was willing to give this a try — I mean the flavor, Peanut Butter Cookie, how awesome does that sound?! Well, it not only sounds good, but tastes GREAT — like those homemade peanut butter ball cookies that are covered in powdered sugar and are just a little bit crunchy? They are yummy and super satisfying. MB had one before a 5 hour bike ride and it kept her happy for the first 3 hours! Thumbs up!
Hoo Ha Ride Glide®
Three things that go together.
Good weather means lots of things start to come out from hiding — white legs, short sleeve shirts, sunglasses, and bicycles. With bicycles, come bike shorts and bike saddles. With bike shorts and bike saddles, come, well, ummmm, painful certain unmentionable body parts. So for our first long ride of the year, we did a little research and shopping and discovered HOO HA RIDE GLIDE® Cycling Anti-Chafing Cream
. Now, this was recommended to me at a bike store by a MAN who used it instead of other similarly semi-vulgar named men’s products. He said while it was a bit more expensive, you could use less, and importantly, it works. He was right. 5 hours in the saddle. No issues. Zero. We are fans. Try it.
SolRx Sport Sunscreen
Apparently our long bike ride inspired most of these faves. This is the last. Promise. Guess what else comes with good weather?? SUNSHINE. Which is awesome, unless you are of German/Scandanavian descent and get a sunburn in, like, two seconds. Add supersensitive skin, running, and water sports to that, and you get constant struggles to balance outdoor fun with skin protection. High-powered sunscreen is a must. But, for some of us, most typical drugstore sunscreens (even those for sensitive skin and kids) cause intense (seriously intense) stinging pain that, other than the prospect of skin cancer, is far worse than sunburn pain. Enter a product discovered long ago on a trip to Hawaii — SolRx Sport Sunscreen
. This product has actually changed its name over the years — formerly being associated with the Xterra triathlon series among other things — but the performance has stayed the same. It claims to last for 8 hours through sweat, swimming, running, whatever. MB’s used it for triathlons, marathons, beach trips, week-long sailing trips, you name it. It’s the only product she’s tried that stays put, lasts in water, and at least with the Dry Zinc formula
, doesn’t make your face sting (at least not until after 6 days of continuous use). Try the original formula
for the rest of your body! You can find it on Amazon.com
Deborah in her Gym Girl Ultra
Ok, last, but not least!! Enough with the cycling — Our first love is, yes, you guessed it, RUNNING. And what is our favorite part about warm weather running? Well, I hope it’s pretty obvious, SKORTS!!! Another benefit of this blogging thing has been discovering other social media, like Instagram. (Yes, I know, I just turned us into dinosaurs. Sorry. We are GenXers for the most part. We try to rebel against social media.) Anyway, we’ve known about SkirtSports
, an awesome company started by professional triathlete Nicole deBoom after she started wearing skirts for the run portion of her races. Well, shipping and sizing questions held us back until Instagram and the Friday Flash Sale. Deborah snapped up an adorable and beautiful green Gym Girl Ultra
for the Montgomery Marathon
(which was near St. Patrick’s Day). She loved it so much, MB snapped up the Lioness
. Let me tell you (and we’ve worn A LOT of skorts), these are really, really great. Super comfortable. Beautiful fabrics. Fun styling. Shorties that Stay. In. Place. Really. We are fans! Check out their website. You can also find them on Zappos
So that’s it! Our first Friday Five!
What are YOU loving this Month!
