Hydration: Handheld and group running options
Staying hydrated while working out at the gym is so easy – fill a water bottle and out the door you go. While exercising your water bottle is within reach whenever you need it. I wish staying hydrated while running outdoors in hot weather or on long runs was that simple because having water when you need it and finding a sport’s drink that can be tolerated can be a monumental task. Through trial and error, I’ve learned that my stomach can tolerate sports drinks only if they are mixed with water.
When I first started running outdoors, I ran short distance out and back routes from my house. Depending on the weather and length of the run, I kept water or a water/sports drink mix on my porch. When I became tired of the out and back runs, my next step was to purchase a hand-held water bottle. I am a big fan of my 20 ounce Amphipod water bottle. The design of the bottle and the strap make it super easy to carry while running. I’ve carried this water bottle on training runs and races ranging from 10K’s to marathons. While I am no longer carrying the water bottle at races, I still use it on training runs – no more numerous out and back runs for me.
Even better than my water bottle is the hydration plan for Saturday long runs with my local running club (Bluegrass runners). On Saturday mornings our group gathers for runs of 6 to 20+ miles. Someone in the group gets up early and places crates of water and Gatorade out for us. Whatever distance I’m running, I know there will be something to drink approximately every 3 miles. Another bonus of running with this club is the chocolate milk at the end of the run. Having someone take care of my hydration and recovery needs is so awesome!
