Racing after Dancing in Heels all Night: Best Damn Race
Best Damn Race, Safety Harbor, Florida – Half Marathon, Saturday, February 4, 2017
I didn’t listen to my coach
So I got this awesome coach, she’s local and she’s good at what she does. However, I decided it was a good idea to sign up for a half marathon the morning after my brother’s wedding. Big time WHOMP! Anyway, I trained really hard for this race, my plan was to finish sub 2 hour. Well, that didn’t happen, but it was totally my fault. Drinking, dancing, and staying up late the night before were apparently not a good plan. But I had loads of fun and I wasn’t upset about my time (2:08).
Thankful for Mike
Onto the race… there was no traffic, but helpful police everywhere. I was able to easily find a parking spot by putting one of the three parking locations into my GPS and I went right there. When I got out of the car, I realized my legs were not feeling fresh… stupid high heels!!
I met up with Mike, our running guy. He was already in Florida with his wifey Mary trying out the whole “snow bird thing” — lucky them. He was waiting in the parking lot with my packet, because he’s totally awesome and knew I was busy breaking all the rules of preparing to run a race.
We headed to the start line and checked things out. We chatted, took a selfie and hit up the port-o-potties. There were no lines- yay!! It was still darkish when we started (7:15 a.m.) but the sun soon came out, and I was roasting! Originally the forecast said 50 degrees at the start and about 60 degrees by the finish. YAY perfect… NOT. It was 64 when we started, so I was pretty warm towards the end.
The race goes along the bay and through a nice park and some neighborhoods. It was flat… pancake flat compared to Kentucky. The course had plenty of water stops with honey stinger gels, water, and nuun.
The Best Damn Medal
At the finish I got one of my absolute favorite medals… It is stained glass with a manatee on it! Manatees are near and dear to my heart because (1) It was my elementary school’s mascot and (2) they don’t live in Kentucky and (3) they are non-aggressive and so sweet.
The finish line also had free beer and a BAR!! Mimosas and bloody marys! (would have been perfect if I didn’t drink so much the night before). They had the normal bananas and oranges plus PIZZA and sandwiches. They also had some local vendors. They offered mini donuts and chips and salsa — yummm. They had post-race massages and loads of little running store tents with merchandise to purchase and free stuff. Super fun post-race party!
I Liked the Shirt… It’s a long sleeve and more of a regular shirt than a technical shirt. I like the writing down the side of the arm and it fits me well BUT I’m afraid to put it in the dryer haha!
Lesson Learned: No dancing in heels all night before a half marathon!
